We’re working on a lot of new music right now. Lend us your email and we’ll let you know when it comes out, alongside any tour dates or other major updates. I promise we’ll use it sparingly.
New song "Lucidity Ebbs" out now
We’ve got a new song out on the second compilation album from the OPIA Label, started by Icelandic neoclassical musician Ólafur Arnalds.
This song was made in response to a creative challenge put out by OPIA: Make a song revolving around the note E flat. We did that by recording a handful of E flats being looped on different analog oscillators — and then wrote a song to those.
“Lucidity Ebbs” is out now on whatever platform you use for listening to music. You can also listen to the full compilation here, with some beautiful tracks from other members of the OPIA community.
Sontag Shogun - The Tightrope Session
We've got a new video out today! It's a live performance recorded in an industrial lighting design studio in Brooklyn, and it features a new take on a song from 2022's Valo Siroutuu, a new unreleased song, and some improvising built around Jesse's unique vocal looping techniques. More than anything, it sorta showcases what we do and how we do it, for those of you who have never seen us live.
And please subscribe to our new YouTube channel as we'll be adding more content in the coming months.
Tightrope Session credits:
Ian Temple - Nord piano
Jesse Perlstein - voice, tapes, electronics
Jeremy Young - oscillators, radio, objects, electronics
Directed by Maksim Axelrod
Captured by Ted Maniatakos and Hannah Marcus.
Edited by Ian Temple.
Special thanks to Victoria Young for the use of her beautiful space, Tightrope Studios.
Sontag Shogun "plays Dawn Chorus" is out now!
Hey humans,
The world is terrible as usual and we are taking a break from heartbreak to bring you, well, a song about heartbreak (at least that’s how I interpret it. For the first time ever we are releasing a cover! We are reimagining Thom Yorke's "Dawn Chorus" from his seminal 2019 LP "Anima." As usual we took a minimalist masterpiece and developed it into full-bloom, weaving a wash of piano, the warmth of ebbing oscillator drones and a bed of ambient vocal backing to back the a (drier than usual) lyrical take of Yorke's original writings (with a 3rd stanza written by yrs truly)
We had been covering it live since Yorke’s version came out and it has really grown on and with us, to the point where we felt compelled to share it with everyone. The EP “plays Dawn Chorus” is the cover, an instrumental and re-interpretation of the song by our very own Ian Temple.
We also are blessed with a beautiful cover art from Stéfanie Auger-Roy (which is available as a limited edition signed lithograph) and crisp thoughtful mastering by Holosuite Mastering.
Thanks Thom for making a beautiful song we could play.

2022 in Review (So Far)
This first year out of a double-decker pandemic slumber has been anything but quiet for our little trio of musk oxen. In fact it’s been one of the busiest years of Sontag Shogun’s lifetime; and there’s much more to come…
Let’s take a moment to revisit the highlights of a half-year gone and give you a little preview of what’s to come later this year and beyond. Thanks so much to everyone who has supported us, come to see us perform, and helped us grow — we couldn’t do any of this without y’all!
Flutter & Scrape
In January, we emerged with a recorded work re-engaging with some of the room-based sonic practices that informed our 2017 record Patterns for Resonant Space. Only this time, we laid out objects and instruments around a room, with 10 microphones capturing everything linearly and spatially, and improvised some music and soundscapes within. Thanks to the incredible curatorial team at Flag Day Recordings for issuing Flutter & Scrape on CD.
“Lament” (Live-Ish from Home)
Later in January, we got together virtually to reconstruct a live video version of one of our oldest pieces, “Lament” from our respective homes in New York, Los Angeles, and Montreal, using rakes, rocks, tape loops, voice, and oh yeah that wooden instrument with the white and black thingies, what’s that called again?
A Remix for Haco
In March we were invited by our dear friend and collaborator, Haco, to contribute to a full album of remixes of her spectacular record, Nova Naturo, alongside artists like
Valo Siroutuu with Lau Nau
In April we launched one of the most widely-acclaimed records we’ve ever done (and the most fun!), with our Finnish collaborator, the undeniable musical genius, Lau Nau. The album is called Valo Siroutuu (“The Light Scatters”), and it came out on vinyl LP (via Beacon Sound), on a limited edition CD (via the Japanese label Ricco Label), and in art book form.
We Played Inside Trees & Flowers in NYC
This was insane.
On Air at The Lot Radio with Youngbloods
In April, Jesse reunited with our homies from our former label, Youngbloods, in a two-hour DJ set on Brooklyn’s The Lot Radio featuring tracks from us, our friends, and our influences.
We Nailed the Road
To launch Valo Siroutuu in proper, we three numbskulls met up with Lau Nau for a few dates on the US West Coast in May. And then we ventured off into the desert and into the redwoods to play some more shows as a trio. We had an absolute blast, wrote some new music, and peed in the forest a bunch.
Sontag Shogun x Lau Nau live at Aladdin Theater on May 15th, 2022.
Stay tuned, we’ll be sharing some live videos soon!
And Then…Jeremy Released an Album & had his own Tour
As if two tours at once wasn’t enough, Jeremy went back out on the road three days after Sontag tour ended, traversing the mayonaise-and-dill-scented roads of The Baltic States, Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania, in support of his recently released album, August Tape Sketches out on Meakusma.
Looking Ahead // Late 2022 & Beyond
Expect a Thom Yorke Cover Soon…
Sontag is currently working on a forthcoming cover version of Thom Yorke’s “Dawn Chorus” — a staple of our live shows throughout 2019. Expect a single release in the near future!
Listen to our live version of this song from Casa Del Popolo in Montreal.

Pre-Order the new LP "Valo Siroutuu"
We traveled to Kimitoön, Finland in 2019 and met up with Lau Nau at her house and recorded three days worth of music in the studio, field recordings and acoustic experiments in nature. We brought the material home, got locked down by a pandemic, and started to cut away and restructure it all, letting new song forms take shape, sending stems like postcards, and lyrics of reflection and stillness.
Valo Siroutuu (or “Light is Scattered”) is the result of almost two years of gestation and rumination and the sum is an experiment in ambience, folk, electronics and nature. Helmed as a vinyl release by the Portland-based Beacon Sound and as a CD release by Tokyo-based Ricco Label, it will be available on April 8th, 2022. Beacon Sound will also be releasing a limited edition art book, designed Anna Bernhardt, a beautiful 20-page full color field guide to the making of the album, filled with essays, photos and artwork.
pre-order the album now!
The album is available for Pre-Order now and for the first 100 pre-orders, Beacon Sound will include the Valo Siroutuu art book, free of charge. After the album is released, they will be sold as a deluxe package (higher price) so jump on that deal!

& don’t forget to listen to the eponymous single, out on bandcamp and streaming platforms…
FLUTTER & SCRAPE - OUT NOW ON FLAG DAY RECORDINGS
We are proud to announce our latest studio release, “Flutter & Scrape” is available on Flag Day Recordings. The album is available for purchase (CD or digital) on Bandcamp.
“Flutter & Scrape” is an improvised site-specific piece composed during the “It Billows Up” session. Using prepared piano, sine and square wave oscillators, tape, voice and an interaction with objects, we created a ‘documented walking piece’; a performance that captures bodies, both animate an inanimate, and how the space ultimately responds with echoes and resonance, which gives this piece its ultimate shape. Recommended to listen in a quiet space, trying to imagine the dimensions, the tactility, the materials and the delicate exploration of a room.

The Floating World & The Sorrowful World by Sontag Shogun & Stijn Hüwels out Feb 20th on Thesis.
Pre-Release for The Floating World & The Sorrowful World
We are very excited to announce our upcoming release “The Floating World & The Sorrowful World” on Feb. 20th, 2020. Today marks the pre-release where you can stream a track and pre-order the digital release now.
The Floating World and the Sorrowful World is an improvised collaboration between New York / Montreal electronic experimental trio Sontag Shogun and famed Belgian minimalist guitarist/tape manipulator, and curator of Slaapwel Records, Stijn Hüwels. This minimalist, yet engulfing album was captured in improvisation together at his house in Leuven, Belgium in 2018, and includes some additional sonic decor added in Montreal and Brooklyn. We took inspiration from the abstract, binary meanings of the Japanese word "Ukiyo"—which in different contexts conveys both "the sorrowful world" and "the floating world"—a homophone that highlights an important dichotomy in the human condition. The world exists simultaneously as a place of great emotional heft, and one of surreal hedonistic detachment. Through a constant play of gravity, our lives oscillate between the two, often leaving us feeling transient and unstable. Through swirling, drifting, evolving tonescapes we attempt to capture this beautiful, nebulous, intermediary place—an abstraction measured by the radius separating pleasure and pain. This record delves into the chasm formed by the complex emotional tapestry woven into the fabric of our beings and is a reflection on the limitations of a binary system. We endeavor to exist amid two worlds, satiated by the myriad states within.
"Lament" Video Premier
Today our friends at Stationary Travels reviewed and posted our newest music video for “Lament” accompanied by some beautiful words.
We worked with our dear friend Josh Miller on the video (our second collaboration to date) and it has become a very personal project full of wounds and healing. You can read all about it here.
New Single with Lau Nau from forthcoming EP, "Floréal"
We've got a new EP coming out next month on Beacon Sound that might possibly include some of the most pretty music we've ever made... You be the judge: Pre-order Sontag Shogun's Floréal EP and get it on cassette or digital when it comes out on November 15, 2019.
This four-song album is about slow change, forced change, and longing for what we may have left behind in the process of change. Floréal combines recordings made all over the spatial/temporal map and includes contributions from our incredible friends Laura Naukkarinen and Ora Cogan, as well as engineering by Seth Manchester, John Hull, and Scott Solter, mastering by Rafael Anton Irisarri, design direction by Andrew Neerman, and archival access (which we didn't use) by Bern'rd Hoffmann's estate. Published by Beacon Sound (BNSD042).
Pre-order Sontag Shogun's Floréal EP and get your digital copy via Bandcamp or your c26 cassette copy courtesy of Beacon Sound on November 15.

The Reviews Are Coming In
We’ve got some great words regarding our new record and we’ve put some of the highlights below. Enjoy!
REVIEWS
“Embedding classical-tinged piano and wordless vocals within a thick mass of electronics and field recordings makes the group's sound instantly identifiable and goes a long way towards distinguishing a fully realized recording such as this one.” - Textura
“The open-ended nature of a sonic tapestry is fertile ground for contemplation. On It Billows Up, humanity meets the rest of nature and is given a musical score: disparate forces forming a fragile harmony." - A Closer Listen
“Using nothing but sine and square wave oscillators, reel-to-reel tape loop collages of field recordings, and live electronically-treated vocal noise, Sontag Shogun continue to breathe an authentic, pure energy into their sound.” - Nest HQ
“Sontag Shogun remain a strange and indefinable group that stands out on an increasingly homogeneous cultural landscape.” - Indie Is Not A Genre
“To say that Sontag Shogun are the equivalent to a sound travelog is an understatement. They, on this album fuse electroacoustic sounds and techniques to field recordings which make you feel as if you are on a journey through various countries with them.” - Drifting, Almost Falling
“Sontag Shogun reveal bits and pieces of a modern fable with each vignette here.” - Tone Shift
We’re thrilled to announce the release of our 3rd studio full-length record “It BIllows Up” (released by Youngbloods) on vinyl & it’s eponymous artbook companion at NYC’s Printed Matter on Friday, May 17th.
"It Billows Up" vinyl & book launch at Printed Matter NYC! - May 17th
THE BOOK
Edited and designed by book artist Thad Higa, It Billows Up is an art book created as a companion to the eponymous record by Sontag Shogun. Thad & Sontag asked artists to generate image and text in response to sections of the album. Thad then collaged these submissions using both digital and analogue techniques (cutting, crumpling, typewriting, drawing, etc.) similar to the processes involved in compositions of the album itself. The book’s form and materials (vellum, Japanese stab binding, risograph) also speaks to the pastiche of disparate materials that when arranged, designed, and bound together creates a landscape.
The book originated as a response to sound and grew into a meditation on listening, on hearing, on humanity and the pains and complications of existence. It is the hope for slowness, attentiveness, care for the environment one dwells in and how our created environs affect and interact with others.
This limited edition book (only 80 copies!) comes with a digital download of "It Billows Up".
The Record
It Billows Up is a linear, continuous narrative featuring ambient meshes of layered field recordings, analog oscillators, foley, and improvised piano. The multimedia project is their third full length, and is released across a variety of limited edition physical formats.
Produced in a limited edition of 500 copies, It Billows Up is 140 gram black opaque 12" LP with an uncoated paper sleeve featuring the album credits as typed on a 1939 Corona typewriter in a smooth, glossy jacket featuring a softly glowing print created by illustrator, printer, & collagist China Marsot-Wood.
These two pieces are meant to be experienced simeltaneously and while they can exist apart, they are enhanced by each others’ artwork, flow and contemplation.
There will most definitely be special deals and fun surprises so if you are in the NYC area check it out! here’s the event page! Come listen to the record, say hi, buy books, listen to us do some readings & hang at Printed Matter!

new album "it billows up" is now available for pre-order
We’re excited to announce our newest album “It Billows Up," coming out on 12” vinyl May 17 via Youngbloods. This album is our first experiment trying to capture our live sound that we’ve developed the past few years touring Japan, Europe, and North America. We recorded it with the amazing Seth Manchester at his RI studio Machines With Magnets in three days last year.
